Experience the Highlands on Horseback!

riding113

" A thoroughly enjoyable riding experience. An opportunity to experience the true Highlands - remote and inspiring".

Our Horse rides are conducted from Elsenham Farm,a little piece of paradise nestled into a scenic corner of the East Griqualand Highlands. Your ride will take you from the homestead, up into the surrounding mountains with their grand vistas and isolated valleys. These often mist schrouded highland peaks are home to various species of free ranging antelope common to the area such as Blesbuck, bushbuck, Common Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, the rare Grey Rhebuck and the endangered Oribi.

" The expansive skies, sweeping grasslands and Highland veiws combine to create an impression not quickly forgotten".

The ride follows undulating hillsides and narrow rivers and streams which may be crossed several times during the ride. A short refreshment break may be taken where riders can take time to enjoy a hot cup of Tea/ Coffee or on a hot day, some refreshing soft drink. Depending upon the day of the week, riders may have the opportunity of rounding up some cattle and doing a count or driving them to a point suitable for the farmer for his ranching work.

" The Mountain trails are often shrouded in morning mist, cloaking the riders in a surreal and otherwordly light".

Numerous bird species occur in this area and several species of raptors can be viewed while out on Rides. One may be lucky to see the Cape Vulture soaring in search of carrion or from fairly close range as they float past on the higher ridges. The early mornings and late afternoons may echo the chorus of the Redwing Francolin as they communicate their presence on the mountain slopes.
